Balancing Your Diabetes with the Life You Want

One of our very best classes is called “A Sweet Life.” It’s a diabetes self-management program that helps people with diabetes or pre-diabetes live a full, active life in spite of the disease. We may have an idea of what we should and do, but it’s like being told that you should lose weight—you’ve been taught a lot of the do’s and don’ts, but it’s so hard to manage! The nice thing about “A Sweet Life” is that it gives people the support and confidence they need for their health and well being.
Multiple studies have been done on the effectiveness of this class. Findings have all been positive. Six months after the workshop, participants had significant improvements in depression, symptoms of hypoglycemia, communication with physicians, healthy eating, and reading food labels. They also had significant improvements in activity level and self-confidence. At 12 months, participants continued to demonstrate improvements.
The workshop is given 2½ hours once a week for six weeks. People with type 2 diabetes and/or close family members learn current information on diabetes management, make weekly action plans, and help each other solve problems in creating and carrying out their plan. Classes are greatly engaging, with mutual support and success building the participants’ ability to manage their health and maintain fulfilling lives.
